It's backstage in the middle of the latest episode of Razor Wrestling and the newest arrival to the Razor roster is standing in his own secluded little section of the Bobby Shitake Arena. Even backstage, one can tell there's something different about Alex Kincaid right away. He stands over six feet tall, his chest and biceps straining the possibily-too-tight-on-purpose Bob Seger shirt he wears. He's got a scruffy looking beard and hair that hangs down past the base of his neck. His emerald eyes though, are locked with intensity on the scene unfolding in front of him. Now that the show is passed, eagle eyed viewers will notice he's watching Pascal Gaudin dissect Jack McGraths arm.
Next to him, his wife and manager Alyssa is absentmindedly scrolling through social media on her phone. The action in the ring doesn't some to appeal to her as much as it does him and she doesn't even notice when the cameraman walks up to them. Alex does though. He looks away from the monitor and raises an eyebrow, wondering how he's going to begin this address. Finally, he slams his hands against the wall he's leaning against and stands to his full height.
”You know, Alyssa, next week is going to be an emotional night for me.”
Alyssa looks up from her phone and his sudden theatrical tone and shakes her head. She tucks her phone in her pocket and throws her hands up helplessly, showing her confusion at his sudden exuberance. He grins and continues speaking.
”Oh yeah, yeah, absolutely. Next week is going to be one of the most challenging encounters of my professional life. Whenever you show up in a new place, that first match sets the tone. That first time you stand under the bright lights and you hear that bell ring in a new place it's up to you to set the agenda. Are you gonna be like everyone else? Some fly by night guy who just wants to go out there and have good matches? Or are you going to be something special? Are you going to be something DIFFERENT? Are your matches going to MEAN something under those bright lights?
Normally, that's a lesson I have to teach somebody. Young wrestlers will tell you they get it. They'll tell you they understand every second of ring time is a second of their careers they'll never get back but they don't. They don't, not really. They're bullshitting. They all think they're young, and invincible, and they're going to change the world. So I gotta go out there and smack them around a little. Teach them a lesson. But that is not something I'm going to have to do with Ax Rockwell is it Alyssa?”
He folds his arms in front of him and faces the camera. Alyssa, who had not expected to be roped into this impromptu promo, is dumbfounded and doesn't know what to say. He leans slightly toward her and then fully turns his head to look at her. Once his eyes are locked with her he slowly shakes his head. She cracks into a snicker and he turns back to the camera, pointing a thumb at her.
”Listen to this, listen. My manager. So unprofessional. Outrageous behaviour, honestly. Sorry about her Ax. See, I know that's not something I need to teach you because the word is you've been around the block. I'm not going to bullshit you and pretend that I've seen every one of your matches or some shit. No, I haven't. What I did do is when I put pen to paper, I asked them 'who's gonna give me the most trouble after my first match?' and you know what they said? They said I'd be lucky to get through that first match. Because Ax Rockwell is a bad man. Ax Rockwell does not stop. Ax Rockwell has been in enough fights that he's got calloused knuckles and leather skin and he's the kind of guy you put at the door when you want to make sure anybody who walks through it has to earn it.
See yeah, that's the kind of guy you put under the bright lights with Alex Kincaid. Because sitting here, watching this show I see a lot of bad, bad people who can do a whole lot of damage. And if I want to prove that I'm everything that I say I am, if I want to be one of the defining talents in this company than you're exactly the kind of challenge I need to face. But you know what the scariest part is? You know the part that really gets my heart thumping? I know you know this. Guy like you's probably heard this 'I need to beat you to prove I'm something' promo a thousand times. It doesn't shake you, I bet. Works for me. Because I don't want you scared. I want you at your best. It doesn't mean anything if you beat a lesser version of you. It doesn't mean anything if we go out there to show everyone what wrestling SHOULD be and it isn't you. It has to be the BEST Alex Kincaid vs the BEST Ax Rockwell. And I think it will be. When you and I, next week, are under the...”
He turns to let Alyssa finish the sentence but his impassioned ranting has her absolutely dumbfounded. She opens her mouth to speak and then just scoffs again, shaking her head like she doesn't understand. Finally Alex purses his lips, frowning deeply and feigning a menacing glare at her.
”You didn't even get it. You weren't even listening. Unbelievable.”
He walks past her, off camera down the hallway. She gives a stunned look at the camera and then trots off to follow him. The last shot is of her pulling her close with one arm and giving her a playful kiss on the top of her head before we slowly...fade...to...black...
